Ancient Greece
today in class we continued to work on our essay about Homer. We made some corrections to finalize the essay and we also put together a picture page to go along with the essay. Here is another paragraph from our essay...
Towards the end of the dark ages, between the 12th and 8th century BC, Homer traveled around Greece telling epics and poetry that he had entirely memorized. He was an old man that was blind, making his storytelling prowess, that made him the father of greek culture, almost unbelievable. It is believed that he may have been an inhabitant of Ionia, in modern-day Asia Minor and since he was born before the use of a chronological dating system was commonplace, it is unknown when he was born. Most of his poetry was in an Ionic dialect. Little is known about Homer and what is assumed from his works. The blind poet in The Odyssey was most likely inspired by the poet. It was once written by Lane Cooper in 1917 the “Homer and Sophocles (another ancient Greek author) saw clearly, felt keenly, and refrained from much”. His two great epics were The Odyssey and The Iliad that both chronicle the time around the Trojan War. These epics were not just stories to the ancient Greeks, they were works of art. Homer’s stories serve as an example of classic Hellenistic and greek culture and have heavily impacted many ancient and modern cultures. Even the great Greek philosopher Plato considered Homer to be the educator of all of Greece. And here is a picture of our picture page.

we added descriptions of the picture on the next page of the essay
